While Americans across the country are preparing to breathe easier under the economic relief of President Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” here in Washington State the air just got thicker, and not from wildfire smoke. On July 1, Governor Bob Ferguson and his Democrat-led legislature unleashed a wave of tax hikes designed to undercut every ounce of relief the federal bill was meant to deliver in my opinion.
You read that right: as the federal government moves to empower workers, families, and small businesses, Olympia moved to ensure you never see the benefit.
Let’s be clear, these taxes were not rolled out of necessity. They were premeditated. Olympia saw the momentum behind the Big Beautiful Bill and struck fast to claw back every cent of financial breathing room it would offer Washingtonians. This wasn’t governance, it was sabotage.
Have a look….
Gas tax: +6¢/gal, bringing Washington’s rate to 55.4¢/gallon, among the highest nationally.
Diesel tax: +3¢/gal, raising costs for farming, delivery, and essential services.
Hunting & fishing licenses +38%, making family traditions feel like luxury items.
Capital gains tax: now 9.9%, a retroactive penalty on investment and entrepreneurship.
Estate tax rates: up to 35% on larger estates, like vultures circling a legacy.
All this while the federal government is cutting back burdens, slashing unnecessary taxes, and re-centering the economy on American workers not bureaucrats.
You can’t claim coincidence here. These were preemptive strikes. Governor Ferguson and Olympia’s tax-happy Democrats watched federal relief gain traction and couldn’t stand to let it stick. Power feeds on dependency, and in this state, they’re feeding like sharks.
The Big Beautiful Bill threatened to empower individuals, defund bloated government, and restore a sliver of the American Dream. But Olympia didn’t celebrate. They retaliated. They didn’t just raise taxes, they weaponized them to nullify federal reform. This wasn’t budget balancing, it was political payback.
I've spoken privately with several law enforcement officers who work in the field rather than in Olympia offices. Some have openly expressed how deeply they despise Governor Ferguson and the radical ideologues his administration empowers. When the people entrusted with public safety say, “We’re not being governed, we’re being robbed,” that’s not cliché. It’s a wake-up call. These are officers who are made to standby while their hands are tied, not by citizens, but by lawmakers who are clueless concerning law and order.
Common sense is not embraced here in Washington State, it’s attacked.
Just think it through, a gallon of gas costs more than your coffee, a fishing license more than your water bill. Bureaucrats are overnight, writing laws to take from you before you can even breathe easier. This isn’t leadership; it’s economic servitude, and it’s being imposed, not earned.
Washington’s tax policy isn’t accidental. It’s intentional, targeted, and oppressive. The question now: How long will we let a government treat our freedom like a loophole to be closed?
President Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill offered financial sovereignty. Washington’s response was calculated dependency. What Olympia delivered on July 1 wasn’t a bill, it was the government in the State of Washington taking ownership over the people.
If you want your freedom, your wallet, your future, you’re going to have to take it back. Because Governor Ferguson and his allies sure aren’t giving it willingly. If you are entrusting the states Republican Party to make a difference, to help stop this lunacy I would offer the following:
I have lived in Washington State since 2003. The party continues to do an exceptional job of losing! Far too many of us checked out, myself included!
